Creating a memorable female character with huge audience appeal is not just a matter of choosing a heroine over a hero. By creating a heroine, the screenwriter has to consider all kinds of differences, from character development to gender issues in the development process. Venturing where other screenwriting guides fear to tread, The Woman in the Story provides screenwriters and storytellers with a groundbreaking creative paradigm for the creation of memorable female characters. Written by a professional screenwriter for screenwriters, this is a long-overdue “how to” with a difference, casting a refreshingly honest and empowering woman-centric light on every stage of the writing process.
Inspired by female psychology and gender issues, The Woman in the Story guides the screenwriter through a highly creative conceptual process of development. Each of the ten chapters presents new principles that are designed to stimulate and encourage risk taking and prevent stereotyping in female characterization. Plenty of film examples and unique exercises equip the screenwriter with all the skills necessary to develop their own memorable female character from start to finish.
